My itinerary is one day longer than a 14-day pass. I imagine I will need to buy one transfer ticket at the end of the trip. Those of you who are knowledgable, please let me know if I'm doing anything wrong! I know that the last few Tokyo days do not involve any long-distance travel, but I don't see any way of avoiding a 14-day pass.

Thanks for your suggestions!

June 16 Arrive at Narita airport, spend 1 night at Narita airport hotel.
June 17 First day of 14-day JR Rail Pass. Take NEX into Tokyo, transfer to Kyoto bound Shinkansen train.
June 18 kyoto
June 19 day trip to Nara
June 20 day trip to Matsumoto castle
June 21 day trip to Himeji castle
June 22 depart Kyoto, travel to Hiroshima
June 23 spend day in Hiroshima
June 24 depart Hiroshima, travel to Osaka
June 25 spend day in Osaka, see aquarium?
June 26 depart Osaka, travel to Tokyo
June 27 explore Tokyo
June 28 day trip to Nikko
June 29 other day trip
June 30 explore Tokyo
July 1 depart Tokyo via Narita airport

Hello there,

The JR pass will work very well for your itinerary. There's plenty of travel in your itinerary, which would cost a lot more without the JR pass.

In terms of route, you are doing good. There's no unnecessary travel and the root looks good. So there's not much for me to correct :)

Hope this helps and have a great time in Japan!

Hi,
One question that pops up is why you are doing Matsumoto as a day trip from Kyoto. One way is over 3 hours, so over 6 hours of your day is sitting on the trains. It's not as bad from Tokyo, and would probably be better as a day trip from there.
For your other day trip on June 29th, two good choices would be either to Hakone or Kamakura/Enoshima. It's all up to your interests.

Good luck!

Ah, yes, I can see now that Matsumoto Castle is too far (I must have misread a guide book). Thank you for pointing that out!
