Are we trying to do too much travel?
The 7 day JR pass would be well worth it with all the journeys between the 4th and the 10th. Would having a green car pass make it significantly more comfortable?

You are travelling a lot but it looks well planned and I don't think you are overdoing it. Using a Green Pass would indeed be nice here too, since you will be on the train a lot, at the same time its not a necessity. Personally I really like the Green Seats on the Sakura Shinkansen.
If I could change anything, consider spending a little more time in Kagoshima. This is a very beautiful city with great views on Sakura Jima and Senganen Garden. I think I enjoy the city so much, as you feel like you are away from everything for a moment. Its a great place to day dream.
