Hi,

We we will be going to Japan in January and be getting a 7 day JR Pass. Will it be best for me to use the 7 day pass for the first 7 days of my trip then purchase a one-way ticket from Tokyo central to Narita on the last day?

Day 1 - Narita to Tokyo Arrive 3PM
Day 2 - Tokyo to Takayama
Day 3 - Takayama to Shirakawago to Kanazawa (Nohi bus not included in JR pass)
Day 4 - Kanazawa
Day 5 - Kanazawa to Hakubaoike
Day 6 - Hakuba
Day 7 - Hakuba to Tokyo
Day 8-10 - Tokyo
Day 11 - Tokyo to Narita

Also, I've tried to check Hyperdia for some of my routes and it seems that there is usually more routes for when I check separately for example, Tokyo to Nagoya then Nagoya to Takayama. Does this mean there is a difference in trains or tracks?

Thank you!

Hello there,

I reviewed your itinerary and recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for Day 2 - Day 8. This would allow you to make great savings over normal tickets and have most of your travel covered.

Since there are so many train services in Japan, the best route can depend on what time of day you travel. This is also the reason why you may find different routes in Hyperdia or if you split up the route. This is not something you should think too much about, usually JR Pass users can just tell the JR Staff where and when they wish to travel, the JR Staff will then find the route for you.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel.

I understand that seat reservations are recommended but not necessary on the Shinkansen and that would mean that the ticket prices can be much less.

Is it still advisable to get the 7 Day JR Pass then?

Much appreciated.

Hi again!

Certainly, the JR Pass will still give you great savings. Seat reservations cost about 500yen per ride, so even without them it would be well worth it.
