I'm visiting Japan for 10 days I'm wondering if my plan would actually work

Sep 13: Arrive at Narita Airport at 4PM - Go to Tokyo Station
- Buy [Skyliner Round Trip + Special Combination 2-Day Open Ticket] ¥4,880 - Retrieve JR pass but not activate - Night tour use 1-Day open Ticket

Sep 14: Tokyo Tour - Use 1 day open ticket
Sep 15: Activate JR pass. Go to Mt. Fuji & Five Lake area (Gotemba Station) and then go to Kyoto
- Buy bus pass somewhere in Five Lake area? - From Kyoto station transfer to subway to go to Marutamachi

Sep 16: Day tour in Kyoto (City pass)
Sep 17: Leave Kyoto for Osaka (Walk around the city)
Sep 18: Day trip to Kobe
Sep 19: Day trip to Nara
Sep 20: Day trip to Kumatori
Sep 21: Stay in Osaka, leave for Tokyo at night

When would be the last train? Since this is the 7th day with JR pass, will I still be allowed to book overnight train?

Sep 22: Use Skyliner to go to Narita airport

Thanks for helping me take a look.

Regards,
Andrea

Hi Andrea!

This plan could work but there are a couple of small adjustments here and there that I would make.

First going from Fuji and on to Kyoto, you can reach Gotemba completely by JR, so you won't have to buy any additional tickets. From there you can take a bus closer to Fuji as you wish (or go shopping in on of the premium outlets).
Than going to Kyoto, simply go back to Gotemba and take the train from there to Mishima, from where you can ride the bullet train to Kyoto.

There's no night train between Kyoto and Tokyo, so I would recommend taking a late evening Hikari train back to Tokyo on your last day that you can use the JR Pass. The last Hikari train leaves Kyoto at 20:49.

I think you are fine for the rest :)

Have a great trip!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the tips. However, after Kyoto, I'm going to Osaka and stay there for the remainder of the trip. I will leave from Osaka for Tokyo. Would the JR pass be worth it? Thank you.

Andrea

Hi Andrea,

So after Kyoto you will just be in Osaka and not visit Kobe, Nara etc, nor go back to Tokyo?

In short, the JR Pass would be worth it if you can make at least the return Tokyo (or from Fuji area) - Kyoto, than the JR Pass would be worth it, otherwise I would stick with normal tickets.

Thanks, Daniel. I will travel to Nara, Kobe from Osaka. I guess I'll still get a JR pass for my trip then. Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Andrea
