Hi there!

By far the best way to get online in Japan is by renting a portable 3G/4G wifi device (like a MiFi) at the airport on arrival. These can work out at around ¥1200/day, and will let you connect multiple devices at the same time. We now also provide pocket wifi rental in Japan

We have a post with more about mobile internet rental here.

Although the bullet trains also offer Wifi services, it is not free, is pretty pricey, requires a protracted (japanese) signup process and is not as flexible as the mobile internet solutions that you can use anywhere, including on the bullets.

Hope this helps!
