I arrive in Haneda airport on May 21 will stay overnight then May 22 go to Kyoto from Haneda. Will stay in Kyoto for 5 days but want to go to Osaka in a day then back to Kyoto. Leave Kyoto on the 27 to go to Tokyo for my flight back to US on May 28. Which train tickets do you suggest I purchase to save the most money. I am traveling with my husband. Thank you for any input.

As is, a 7 day JR Pass would not pay off. But you could easily add a day trip to Himeji, and a day to Nara is well worth it also - then it would pay off. If you don't want to do that, then you could try buying the Japanican JR Pass 22% discount ticket. You'd have to pay yourself to go to Osaka and back, but still save over the full JR Pass.

Thank you for quick response. I'm seriously considering your advice to buy the Japanican JR pass. This is for the bullet train ride, isn't it? Is this just a roundrip train ride (Tokyo-Kyoto then Kyoto-Tokyo) only or is this a multi-use since it's called JR pass. I appreciate your response.

It's a discounted bullet train ticket - it differs from the rail pass in that you can't stop off in between Tokyo & Osaka, nor can you use it beyond Osaka. And you must use unreserved seating. But if you are only going to the Osaka/Kyoto area, you can still end up saving money over a full JR Pass. You should definitely go see Nara as well though.
