Hi,

I am going to be in Japan from December 10th (arrive in Kansai Airport around 11:30am) to December 17th (I plan to be at Narita Airport at 11:00am) and would like to clarify some doubts regarding the JR Rail Pass.

** My first doubt is: does the 7 days pass cover the entire period I described?

The second point is regarding the routes that I will do and if the JR Rail pass will be applicable.
I intend to:
1. Go from Kansai Airport to Nagoya (Hotel address will be: Com`S Hotel, 2-23-22 HIGASHI-SAKURA, NAKA-KU,NAGOYA-SHI, AICHI, 460-0005 JAPAN Nagoya) (on Dec.10th)
2. Go from the Hotel (as above address) to Kyoto and back. (on Dec.11th)
3. Go from the Hotel (as above address) to the Toyota Stadium and back (on Dec.12nd).
4. Go from Nagoya (as above hotel address) to Tokyo (Hotel address will be: Sunroute Shinagawa Seaside Htl, 4-12-8 Higashi-shinagawa, Shinagawa, Tokyo (on Dec.13th morning)
5. Go from the Hotel (as the address on item 4) to the Tokyo Disney and back. (date to be defined)
6. Go from the Hotel (as the address on item 4) to the Yokohama Stadium and back (on Dec.16th)
7. Go from the Hotel (as the address on item 4) to Narita Airport (on Dec.17th)

** My second doubts: is the JR Pass applicable on all the routes I described?

** My third a last doubt is regarding what time do the JR trains stop working at night.

I will depart from Brazil on December 01st so I would highly appreciate your support on clarify those doubts as soon as possible so I can order it in time to receive it on my residence.
I am writing in English due to I was not sure if I needed to, but I am comfortable by receiving the reply either in English or Portuguese.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there!

As you'll be in Japan over an 8 day period, the 7 day JR Pass will only be valid for 7 of these. If you go for the pass, I recommend using the 7 day pass as soon as you land as you have some long distance travel to Nagoya planned then. This means that you will need to pay separately for your travel to Narita Airport.

The JR Pass will cover the majority of the travel you list, however you may need to puchase some subway tickets for the last bit of your journey to some destinations, such as Toyota Stadium and Yokohama stadium. These will likely be around ¥200-¥300 so will not be huge expenses.

In general JR trains stop operating around 12am-1am. Trains in Tokyo tend to operated later, but the main thing to watch out for is that as the trains stop operating at midnight, the last trains to leave Kyoto for Tokyo (and vice versa) will be around 8pm.

By the way, here's a cost breakdown for your trip with some suggested routes for you:

  1. Kansai airport > Nagoya: ¥8,270 (137mins, 247km)
  2. Nagoya > Kyoto: ¥5,640 (37mins, 147km)
  3. Kyoto > Nagoya: ¥5,240 (49mins, 147km)
  4. Nagoya > Kozoji: ¥400 (27mins, 24km)
  5. Kozoji > Nagoya: ¥400 (23mins, 24km)
  6. Nagoya > Shinagawa: ¥10,580 (99mins, 359km)
  7. Shinagawa > Maihama: ¥290 (37mins, 19km)
  8. Maihama > Shinagawa: ¥290 (38mins, 19km)
  9. Shinagawa > Yokohama: ¥280 (16mins, 22km)
  10. Yokohama > Shinagawa: ¥280 (17mins, 22km)
  11. Shinagawa > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥1,450 (98mins, 86km) (not included in calculation)

JR ticket cost: ¥31,670 for 10 legs

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. It was very helpfull.

I understood most of the points and the only remaining doubt I have is that after consulting a train time table, as example from Nagoya to Shinagawa, I've seen most options with the "Nozomi" Shinkansen, which matches the price list you show but if I am not mistaken is listed as an exception regarding validity of the JR pass. Would it be a problem on my trip?

Thanks again,

Fabio.

Hi Fabio,

The JR Pass is not valid on the Nozomi and Mizuho class shinkansen, but is valid on all other classes. You can deselect nozomi (as I have in the searches above) to find the valid shinkasen that you can use. For guidance there are generally 2 Hikari class shinkasen every hour between Nagoya and Kyoto and Nagoya and Shinagawa.

Hope this helps!

For those planning to atend for the Fifa Club World Cup keep in mind that the correct stadium for the final match is Nissan Stadium . In this situation, the right train station would be shin-yokohama, I supose.

[Portuguese] Para aqueles que vão para a final do mundial de clubes da FIFA prestem atenção que os estádio correto é o Nissam Stadium /. Neste caso, a estação de trem correta, acredito que é shin-yokohama.

Abs,
Daniel

Sorry but, are you sure regarding the stadium?
Seems clear in the FIFA website (links below) saying that International Stadium Yokohama will be hosting the finals.

Hy everyone,
First of all thanks for the suport on this trip.
I have some last questions regarding the Narita Express leaving from Shinagawa.

  1. At the site I cannot remove the reserved seat selection.
Does it mean I cannot go on not researved seats (and save half the cost)?

  2. There are some options which shows trains passing on Tokyo and even some other stations, but saying same arrival and departure tracks and indicating 0 (zero) transfers.
Does it mean that I have to stay on the train (no need to change trains)?

Thanks again,

Fabio.
