Travelling to Hakuba on New Years Day

Hi,

Five of my friends and I will be travelling from Shinjuku to Hakuba on New Years Day. We already have JR passes because we are planning on doing other travel but I have been warned that traveling on the trains this day will be extremely busy and we risk missing some trains or having a difficult journey.

I know you can reserve seats when you get to Japan, but we won't be arriving until 27th December so I fear this will be too late to reserve 6 seats for New Years Day.

Are we better off prebooking a bus and shuttle online to take us to our chalet in Hakuba?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Its a hard call to make but I think you will be okay getting train tickets if you get them on the day of arrival (27th).

However I can also understand if you want to be sure a 100% and book a bus beforehand. You could also consider renting a car in case the train is fully booked.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
