Traveling in Japan

I am debating buying a JR pass for Japan since I am going for about 10 days. I can buy a seven day pass but would it be cheaper to just buy train tickets as I go? I don't want to shell out almost 300 dollars if I don't use it that much. Does the JR pass work for the subways in Tokyo as well? Please anyone with insight, let me know.

My travel dates are from August 2nd-6th in Tokyo. August 6th until 8th in Osaka and the 9th until the 11th in Kyoto and heading back to Tokyo for a night. What would work best for me?

Hi there,

Interesting question. The JR Pass can be a great questions depending on the amount of travel you do. In your case the difference is small but I do think that it would be worth it to consider a 7 day JR Pass.

Normal tickets for traveling from Tokyo - Osaka and Kyoto - Tokyo using the bullet train will cost about the same as a 7 day JR Pass. From this point on, any additional travel is basically what you save. Now inside Tokyo and Osaka the JR Network is very extensive and generally enough to get you around around both cities.

A coverage map can be found here (bottom of the page) Please note that the subway/metro system is not covered.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your help. How do I acquire one of these seven day passes? Can I choose the days that I use it on?
