Hello,

I need some help on how to travel in and out of the Hakone area.

First: I am heading to Hakone area from Kyoto. Is the JR pass good for this Shinkansen?

Second: on departure day, going to the Haneda International Airport (HND) from Hakone, What is the best way?
I have mid-morning flight so is it better to stay over one night in the Haneda airport?

Many thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank,

The first thing to know is that the bullet train station for Hakone is Odawara station. From there it's easy to access the area through local transport.

You can take the Shinkansen directly from Kyoto to Odawara. The same goes for Tokyo, bullet trains run directly from there to Odawara and take 36 minutes.

Getting to Haneda takes about 70-80 minutes, so you could travel there in the morning. At the same time I can understand that it could be nice to have this behind you and stay near Haneda.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

Thank you so much for your help. It really helps.

I did a query in Hyperia and found that I will take 3 trains from Hakone-yumoto station to Haneda airport. Is that correct?

First train: Hakone to Odawara,
bullet train: Odawara to Shinawaka
third train: Shinawaka to Haneda airport

One more thing.......if we stay close by the Hakone-yumoto station, are we able to navigate all over Hakone's tourist sights?

Hi Frank,

Hakone is not so big, so you can pretty much stay anywhere in the area, as long as you are near a station.

The route you found is indeed correct :)

Hope this helps too,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

Do you know if there are taxi available at the Hakone yumoto train station?

Do you know where is the tourist visitor center in the Hakone area?

Also your answer above mentioned that Tokyo has direct bullet trains to Odawara of 36 minutes. Which Toyko train station are referring to?

Many Thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank,

1.) Taxi's are everyone. You may have to call one but I am sure that you can get a cab.

2.) There's one at Odawara station and most stations at least have a small tourist area.

3.) I was talking about Tokyo station. There's only one other station in Tokyo where the bullet trains towards Odawara stop, this is Shinagawa.

Hope this helps :)
Daniel
