Travel from Nagoya to Tokyo via Hakone

I have a serious doubt if I should spend the night at Hakone, if staying at the lake Ashinoko makes me feel too ambitious. It looks traveling from Odawara is time consuming even though the hotel has a shuttle. Also because we will have very little time in Hakone. We will arrive on Oct 6 fm Nagoya and leave on Oct 7 to Tokyo but want to stop by Kamakura and Yokohama. It is my first time in Japan and we have bought the Rail pass. I would very much appreciate feedback to make a decision on including or not Hakone. If there is a specific suggestion as in which area to stay in Hakone or where else to spend the night on the way from Nagoya to Tokyo.... Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I think Odawara would make for a good base to explore Hakone from and to travel from to Nagoya as it is directly on the Shinkansen. It would even be possible to just make a quick tour around Hakone and return to Odawara in the afternoon then travel on to Nagoya.

The key to making this a success is to plan ahead. Make a list for yourself what you wish to see/do in Hakone, then look at how much travel time you need. From there it should be easy.

Enjoy Japan!

Hi Daniel, I had thought of complementing my "city" travels with a spa town. I booked Prince which is next to the lake, with view of Mnt Fuji (if it is a clear day), relax with a massage and maybe go on the funicular and see the Old Hakone Road. I understand the hotel is at 1 hr 45 min from Odawara thats why I have he doubt on the next day. We will come from Nagoya, but returning to Tokyo we want to go to Kamakura and Yokohama, but we need already nearly 2 hrs to get to Odawara, thats why I have my doubt..... Is Hakone really worth it or shall we stay overnight for example in Kawaguchi ??
