hi all, we are off to visit our son in Japan in April/May and will be using Japan rail passes for our travel - my question concerns my son's options. we know he cannot use a JRP because he is currently resident in Japan but are there any other rail-passes available for residents?

thanks for any helpful info - gratefully received!

Hi there,

Generally there is no JR-Pass or the like avaialble for Japanese or Visa holders other then ''temporary visitor''.
Sometimes you can buy discounted tickets however on specific train routes. If you let me how your general plans I may be able to point some out for you!

-Best regards, Daniel

Thanks Daniel-san!

We are arriving in Tokyo on Sunday 28th April and he is planning to take an overnight bus from where he is, in Gifu province (near to Nagoya). We will stay overnight in Tokyo and at the moment, we plan on going to Kyoto on Monday 29th and then to Hiroshima on Tuesday 30th. On the Wednesday we will travel to Inuyama - we haven't settled on what we will do after that but we are aware it is Golden week so I'm guessing it's unlikely he will be able to get any deals huh?

Any help you can give us will be welcome!

Regards

Hi Auntyp,

There are a couple of options to save a little money, even though it is golden week but it may require a little planning before hand. For Tokyo --> Kyoto the Hikari Hayatoku Kippu may be of interest, you have to book it atleast a week in advance but you get 10% discount. The Hikari is also the train you will use with the JR-Pass, so that will work out well.

For the rest it is indeed a little hard to find further discounted tickets, night busses are often a lot cheaper and your son may also be able to buy 5-10% discounted tickets at discount shops that can be found all over Japan.

Enjoy Japan!
-Daniel
