JR East Pass or JR Pass

I am traveling to Oyama for two weeks this Sunday and am wondering if there is a major difference between the JR East pass and the JR Pass. I like the flexibility of the JR East pass as I will mainly be sight seeing on Saturday and Sunday, February 22 and 23. With the East pass, I have the flexibility of using 5 days within a 14 day period. Are they operated by the same company? I think I will stay in the area of the JR East, but want to be sure I make the right choice.

Hi there!

The JR Pass is valid nation wide, the JR East pass is only valid in the Tohoku region which is mainly north of Tokyo, so for instance it can't be used for travel to Kyoto or Osaka.

I think this is the most import thing to keep in mind when deciding for your pass.

Thanks so much! Where would I find the costs for trips from Narita Airport to Oyama and from Oyama to Tokyo? Having those costs would help me make my decision. And if I were to get a ticket to Tokyo and back, would it then be better to get a day travel pass for Tokyo on the JR or on the Metro Subway?

Thanks again for your help!

Hi Jayme,

You can use Hyperdia.com to look up travel times and costs. I went ahead and looked it up for you. A one way Narita - Oyama is ¥ 6,680 and Tokyo - Oyama is ¥ 3,950. Both JR Passes allow for travel around Tokyo on the JR Lines so buying a separate subway ticket may be a bit of a waste.

Hope this helps!

That helps very much! Last question, I think. Can I purchase the JR East flexible 5 day tickets at the Narita Airport? That looks like the route that I am going to take. That will allow me travel on February 16 from Narita to Oyama, three days to explore Tokyo or eastern Japan during my stay (like February 22 & 23), and a return from Oyama to Narita on March 1.

This forum is very helpful!
