Hi,

I am planning to travel from Narita airport to Hakodate, I realize that it will take a long time to travel. Is there an overnight train that I can use with the JR Pass? If there is, do I need to reserve seats or is it first come first served? What routes should I be taking and also, because I arrive at Narita at 3:30pm, is there a train after that time?

Hi there!

Yes there is a night train traveling from Tokyo (Ueno station) to Aomori, this is the Akebono night express train. It may be sold out however as it is very popular and done by reservation, so taking a Shinkansen may be a saver option.

You could also travel to Hakadate after 3:30 but you would arrive around 1:00 in the night. Here is an example itinarary for you. Note that the last train "Hamanasu" is also a night train but it has unreserved seats so you can always board the train.

Hope this helps and good luck with you trip :)
Daniel
