do we buy a jr pass?

Do we buy a JR Pass?

I was wondering if it is worth buying a JR pass for our up and coming trip as we are taking some "private railways". Also if we are going to buy our tickets individually? perhaps in one go at the beginning of our trip? how easy or difficult is this? and are there normally long queues? then if JR Pass is recommended when would we activate it?

Details of our trip:
12/04 Arrive Haneda stay Tokyo
13/04 Tokyo to Hakone-Yumoto
14/04 Hakone-Yumoto to Takayama
15/04 Takayama to Nagoya
16/04 Nagoya to Kyoto
18/04 Kyoto to Nara (day trip return)
20/04 Kyoto to Tokyo
21/04 Tokyo to Narita airport

Thank you very much for your help in advance.... Setta

Hi Setta,

I do think that a 7 day JR Pass could be of good use for your travels. I would recommend using it from 14/04 to 20/04. This way you could cover the following travels: see the list below for normal ticket prices.

14/04 Hakone-Yumoto to Takayama ¥ 12,710
15/04 Takayama to Nagoya ¥ 6,070
16/04 Nagoya to Kyoto ¥ 5,640
18/04 Kyoto to Nara (day trip return) ¥ 1,380
20/04 Kyoto to Tokyo ¥ 13,420

For a total of ¥ 39,220 or ¥ 10,920 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300. So the JR Pass is well worth considering.

Please note that the trip Hakone-Yumoto to Takayama a small additional fee of ¥ 300 for the part Hakone-Yumoto to Odawara as this is traveled on a "private railway". For the beginning of your trip you could consider buying the Monorail + Suica Package and use that for your travel around Tokyo and to Hakone.

Hope this helps!
