Day trips to Kanazawa/Nikko

Hi we will be basing our selves in Kyoto and Tokyo on our upcoming trip and wish to visit Kanazawa. It would seem we could catch a morning train from Kyoto and be in Kanazawa in about 2 hours. And do the same home in the evening. Is this as simple as it seems? Same thing for Nikko from Tokyo? Should we prior book seats or should we just turn at the station? We will be in Kyoto mid April, Tokyo end April.

Are the trains busier on weekends or weekdays and can you confirm the peak hours we should try to avoid.

Thanks for your comments

Hi Again,

It is very easy to reach Kanazawa from Kyoto directly by limited express train. So yes it is as easy as it seems. I don't think you will need to make seat reservations in advance but then again if you can I would do so, just to be sure.

Its almost the same thing from Tokyo to Nikko, only difference is that it includes transfer at Utsunomiya from the Shinkansen to the local JR-Line that does not allow for reservations but generally is not very crowded.

Limited express trains are generally significantly busier during the weekend and sometimes seats can sell out quickly. So if you can make seat reservations beforehand. Local trains however are busiest during normal days while it is rush hour. I would recommend avoiding them if you travel with small kids because it can get very cramped.

Have a great time in Japan!

Thanks a lot Daniel

What is considered peak hour in Kyoto and Tokyo? We do have little ones so will try to avoid peak times.

I must say I really appreciate the quick response and all that this website offers to assist our travel planning.

Hi Again,

In Tokyo and Osaka it is really crowded around 6.30-9.00 a.m. and from around 17.00 to 1900. Kyoto is much more relaxed and rides don't take very long so I don't think you will have to worry about it there, unless you take the train to Osaka.

Let me know if I can help with anything else!
