Good day,

Thanks for this site to post some queries about traveling to Japan.

I have googled our trip to Japan from Osaka to Tokyo on May 23 to June 5 of 2015.

  1. Kansai international Airport to Namba Osaka 5-23 to 5-26
  2. Osaka to Tokyo Shinjuku 5-26 to 5-29
  3. Tokyo to Kusatsu Onsen 5-29 to 5-30
  4. Kusatsu Onsen to Tokyo Shinuya 5-30 to 6-2
  5. Tokyo to Disney land tokyo 6-2 to 6-4
  6. Disney to Haneda Airport 6-4

a.) since we are staying for only 13 days. is it worth to buy the 14 days JR rail unlimited pass?
b.) I wrote that i googles our trip-time, station going back and forth the destination and saw many stations available. thus, i would like to inquire on these means of transporting us , if these are covered by JR rail pass

  1. rapit express train

  2. m marunouchi line
  3. kintetsu nara line
  4. midosuji line
  5. joetsu shinkansen
  6. jr agatsualine
  7. hokuriku shinkansen
  8. JR yamanote line

Hi,
A 14 day JR Pass simply wouldn't pay off for your planned trips. But if you went from Osaka-Tokyo-Kusatsu-Tokyo within 7 days, you could come close to breaking even on a 7 day pass.

Regarding what trains/routes are covered by the JR Pass, basically if it is a JR route it is covered (as well as JR buses from Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station to Kusatsu). City subways are not covered however, nor are non-JR companies like Kintetsu. So the shinkansen and JR express trains are fine, as is the monorail. The Midosuji line and the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line are not.

If you wish to research this further, go to a site like Hyperdia and plug in your start/end points, then click on "More Options" and uncheck the boxes that don't apply (Private railway, airplane, etc. as well as Nozomi/Mizuho which you can't ride on a JR Pass).

Hi,
Well Hiroshima is not near Osaka at all - it is about 340 km away or about 90 minutes away by bullet train. If you go visit Hiroshima/Miyajima then the calculations are considerably changed. In that case, a 2 week pass becomes cost effective. Seeing other areas near Kyoto like Himeji and Nara are also well worth it and would greatly enhance your savings.

BY THE WAY , SHOULD I HAVE TO RESERVE SEATS FOR THE SHINKANSEN BULLET TRAINS IF I REACH JAPAN AND EXCHANGE THE JR RAIL PASS UNLIMITED RIGHT AWAY OR THIS CAN WAIT? OR NO NEED FOR RESERVATION?

THANK YOU

Hi,
It is not needed to reserve seats in advance at all. But you might want to for example between Osaka and Tokyo to reserve two seats on the left hand side in case the weather is good and you can get a good view of Mt. Fuji.

Best of luck!
