Hi there!

Yes, you'll be able to use the Japan Rail Pass to cover this journey - to understand if a 14 day pass (¥45,100)will be better value for you than purchasing single tickets lets take a look at your per ticket costs:

  1. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13220, (164mins, 513km)
  2. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥1680, (27mins, 42km)
  3. Osaka > Hakata: ¥14590, (182mins, 626km)
  4. Hakata > Tokyo: ¥21720, (362mins, 1174km)

TOTAL: ¥51210 for 4 legs

As you can see with a 14 day pass you will make you minimum savings of ¥6110. You could make around ¥5000 more savings if you are travelling to and from Narita Airport at the beginning and end of your trip as this will be covered by the JR Pass too resulting in a total overall saving of ¥11,110 and maximising flexibility to change your plans or add locations as you travel.

If you are not travelling to Narita, and have very firm travel plans, then you could get slightly more savings by opting for a 7 day JR Pass (¥28,300) starting with your trip to Hakata/Fukuoka from Osaka, and paying for single tickets until Osaka. If you go for this option the total cost for you would be ¥43,200, a saving of ¥8010 over single tickets (but with reduced flexibility).

Hope this helps!
